Haitian Sos Pwa (Black Bean Sauce)

Vegan

This is one of those simple, comforting recipes I’ve truly come to love—introduced to me through my husband’s Haitian roots and now something I make for our little family with appreciation. Sos Pwa (bean sauce) is traditionally served with rice and is such a nourishing, easy way to get protein on the table—especially for little ones.

Ingredients (Serves 6)

  • 1 cup dried black beans (soaked overnight if desired)
  • Water (enough to cover beans + extra as needed)
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1–2 scallions

Instructions

  1. Rinse beans and add to a large pot with enough water to cover by a couple of inches.
  2. Add the garlic clove and whole scallion.
  3. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer until beans are very soft—this takes time, but it’s worth it! Add water if it gets too low during cooking.
  4. Once beans are fully softened, carefully pour everything into a blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
  5. Return to the pot and simmer for another few minutes to let the flavors come together. Add salt to taste if you’d like, and more water if it’s not a slightly thinner consistency.

Wellness Notes

  • Black beans are rich in fiber, iron, and plant protein—great for hormone support and energy
  • Smooth and mild—perfect for babies and toddlers
  • Best served with white rice
